Inspired by the album SUN RA STRANGE STRINGS and the compositional methods of Phill Niblock, the majority of this album was recorded in 1-2 hour sessions of solo free improvisations. Much like Ra's "study in ignorance," in which Arkestra members freely improvised textural sounds on unfamiliar string instruments, these sessions were completely unplanned, following the sound of prepared acoustic string instruments electromagnetically activated with an e-bow. These long tracks were then chopped into song length sections and stacked into multitrack sessions in a very simplified variation of Niblock's approach. 1 was recorded with more traditional multitrack overdubbing and guest percussion by SSC. 4 and 6 used a hybrid approach with zither and cello overdubs respectively over basic tracks using the aforementioned technique.
